Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Unlike some forms of cancer, there is no known cure. Mesothelioma affects victims by attacking the thin membrane that surrounds the internal organs, known as the mesothelium.  Unlike some diseases, mesothelioma may not develop for up to 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma. Asbestos was used in a wide variety of building materials across the U.S. from the 1940s to the 1970s. Because of its heat and fire resistance, abundance, and cheap price, it was considered as a miracle material.  Before the dangers of asbestos were realized, many workers, military personnel and civilians were exposed to the mineral without safety equipment.    Today, people face exposure in older buildings that have not undergone asbestos removal or proper abatement techniques.   Those who are most likely to be exposed have generally been laborers such as such as dock workers, military personal, and construction workers.

Occupational Hazards

When asbestos use was at its height, many workers were exposed to asbestos before the dangers were realized. Today, many of the same type of workers face the dangers if they are forced to work in older buildings or are in professions which would require them to remove or replace asbestos laden components. Because of its heat resistant properties, asbestos has been used in everything from building insulation, to floor tiles, to brake pads for automobiles. This means that workers from many different professions can be exposed such as: mechanics, pipe fitters, cement finishers, and sailors.

The During the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York released a high concentration of asbestos dust, exposing those in the vicinity of the Twin Towers, as well as firefighters, relief volunteers, and other first-responders.

Veterans who served between the 1940' and the 1970's may have been exposed to asbestos.  During that time, the military was one of the primary consumers of asbestos. It was used in military buildings such as barracks, mess halls, and administration buildings across the different Armed Service Branches including the Air Force, Marines, Navy and Army.
